Plan for both directions

A wash bag succeeds when it contains the products you use and meets the requirements of the whole journey. Do not assume the outbound airport’s rules apply at the return airport or during a connection. GOV.UK publishes guidance on hand-luggage restrictions, and individual airports provide current instructions. Heathrow’s rules have changed with its security equipment, a useful reminder to check instead of repeating an old universal limit. This guide is about organising familiar toiletries, rather than promising a product will be accepted or recommending a new routine immediately before a trip.

Start with the routine you follow

Lay out the products used on an ordinary morning and evening. For a short break, ask which steps are essential and which are occasional extras. A collection of sample sachets may look compact but can leave you using unfamiliar formulas while travelling. Keep products that already suit you where possible and follow their storage instructions. If a product is medically necessary, check the relevant official guidance and documentation requirements rather than treating it like an optional cosmetic. Keep important items accessible and do not rely on a hotel providing a suitable replacement.

Choose containers by function

A container should close securely, be appropriate for the product and meet restrictions relevant to your route. Label decanted products clearly and avoid mixing formulas or transferring them into unsuitable packaging. Some products are best kept in their original containers, particularly when manufacturer instructions or identification matter. Check that the amount you carry is realistic for the trip. An oversized bottle with a little product inside may still be judged by container capacity where limits apply. Read the current airport rule instead of guessing from how empty the bottle looks.

Separate what can leak

Keep liquids contained away from documents and electronics. A washable pouch can make a spill easier to manage, but its material and closure determine how useful it is. Do not assume a decorative fabric bag is waterproof. Close caps carefully, inspect worn seals and avoid overfilling reusable containers. Pack brushes or tools so they stay clean without pressing against damp products. If the bag is difficult to zip at home, it will be irritating when repacking in a hotel bathroom. Reduce the contents before buying a larger organiser.

Pack the bag before departure and simulate removing anything that may need inspection. The process should be simple enough to repeat when tired. Check that labels remain legible after handling and that you can tell similar containers apart without opening them.

What is worth buying?

A new wash bag is worthwhile if the existing one leaks, is difficult to clean or has compartments that do not fit your products. Matching miniature containers are less useful if they are hard to label or dispense poorly. A compact version of a familiar product can be convenient, but compare cost and future use before buying a complete travel set. Do not add products merely to fill the organiser’s loops and pockets. The best kit is personal and slightly boring: you know what every item does and how to repack it without an inventory.

FAQ and the final check

Do all UK airports have identical liquid rules? Check current guidance for each airport and connection rather than assuming that. Should you remove products at security? Follow the instructions for the airport and lane you use. Can you rely on complimentary hotel toiletries? Only when the property confirms what is available and those products suit your needs. Read GOV.UK’s guidance and Heathrow’s information if applicable. Check again near departure; a neatly packed bag still needs an up-to-date plan.

Before leaving the hotel, inspect the bathroom shelf and shower area once more. Small bottles are easy to overlook when they have been separated from the main kit during the stay.
